The British Canoe Union operates an award scheme which is similar to that of the ICU. To facilitate BCU qualified coaches who wish to move to Ireland, the Training and Development Unit have an equivalence procedure.

Holders of BCU coach qualifications who wish to apply for an equivalent ICU qualification should complete the Qualifications Equivalence Application form and return it to the ICU office.

Applications are considered on a case by case basis by the Training and Development Committee. Candidates should be aware that certain key differences exist in the proficiency awards in particular. Most notably, the ICU level 3, 4 & 5 awards are recognised as being more difficult than the BCU 3, 4 and 5 star awards.
