LIFFEY CHALLENGE FOR 1,000 PADDLERS
12.30 start, Saturday, September 8th, 2007.
Almost 900 paddlers started the 29th International Liffey Descent canoe marathon today. The fastest crew of the day was Salmon Leaps Malcolm Banks and Dermot Hudson, winners of the kayak doubles class. The Mens singles went to South African Barry Lewin.
Excellent flood conditions made the 31k course more challenging than usual. In fact, in the elite K2 class, only 26 of the 50 starters completed the race.
The event is funded by the Irish Sports Council and it continues to attract a large number of paddling tourists, particularly from the UK.
