Kayak Instructor Qualifications

Level 1 Kayak Instructor

1.00     General Aims

The Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification aims to enable candidates to

1.01     Become qualified to run static site introductory kayaking sessions on flat water with groups of up to 6 students.

1.02     Train and assess for the Level 1 Kayak Skills Award

A Level 1 Kayak Instructor is specifically not qualified to journey with groups and is restricted to static sessions only (i.e. same entry and exit point). Static site means travelling no more than approximately 300m from the get on point and no more than 50 metres off shore.

2.00     Course Outline

2.01     The Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered two day Level 1 Kayak Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration) and a half day assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level I Kayak Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.01     Hold the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award

3.02     Be registered with Canoeing Ireland Training Unit as a Trainee Instructor

3.03     Be at least 16 years of age at the time of application.

3.04     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped kayak, personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level I Kayak Instructor Assessment.

4.00     Applying to attend an Assessment

Prior to applying to attend a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     Have maintained registration as a Level I Kayak Instructor Trainee.

4.02     Hold the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award.

4.03     Be at least 16 years of age.

4.04     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped kayak, personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment.

4.05     Have attended an approved Kayak Level 1 Instructor Training Course or Programme within the 24 months preceding a selected assessment date.

Trainee Instructors who have completed training prior to January 2013

4.06     Have recorded in a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Logbook following the completion of a Level I Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours on the water instructional experience under the supervision of at least two registered Canoeing Ireland Instructors who hold a Level 3 Kayak  Instructor qualification.


 

Trainee Instructors who have completed training after January 2013

4.06     Have recorded in a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Logbook following the completion of a Level I Instructor Training Course

·         at least 30 hours of on the water instructional experience under the supervision of at least two currently registered Level 2 Canoeing Ireland Instructors or higher.

 

·         at least 15 hours must be logged in closed cockpit kayaks, the other 15 may be logged in sit on top kayaks.

4.07     Participate in one Irish Canoeing Competition or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.08     Completed an approved First Aid training Course (REC 2 or equivalent).

4.09     Attended an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop

4.10     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Canoeing Ireland Level 3 Instructor.

4.11     Submit a completed Level 1 Kayak Instructor Logbook accompanied by a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment application to a registered Canoeing Ireland Instructor Assessor at least 2 weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

5.00     Format of a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment

5.01     During a Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment, candidates must satisfy an assessor that they are competent to provide safe and enjoyable introductory sessions to a beginner group.

5.02     During assessment, a candidate’s personal canoeing skills and First Aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award and where possible improved on this.

As part of a Kayak Level 1 Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.03     Draw up a lesson plan lasting up to two hours and to organise an introductory session for a novice/basic level group on water of Grade I difficulty or in a Sheltered Tidal Area.

5.04     Teach any stroke, technique, or rescue applicable to flat water as outlined in the Level         1 Kayak Skills Syllabus.

5.05     Prepare a self-appraisal of the lesson plan/water session

5.06     Demonstrate techniques and skills as required by the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award, if requested to do so.

5.07     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively: Self-Rescue, X or Assisted X-Rescue, Unconscious Casualty and Eskimo Rescue.

5.08     Demonstrate an ability to roll competently without any prior set-up.

5.09     Demonstrate an effective method of towing an empty kayak, a kayak with a participant who has a minor injury or illness, a kayak with a participant who has a major injury or illness.

5.10     Present a suitable kayak correctly fitted out for instruction and with other appropriate personal equipment (See List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered. Examination of equipment will form an important part of the overall assessment.

5.11     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

5.12     Demonstrate an ability to deal competently with a basic First Aid scenario which may include but is not limited to: the cause/effect/treatment of Shock, Hypothermia, EAR, and CPR.

5.13     Answer questions on aspects of canoeing covered during the Level I Kayak Instructor Training Course.

5.14     Attend an individual debrief, where the candidate will present their self-appraisal and receive feedback.

Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification Guidelines

  • A Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification can only be assessed by a member of the Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification Assessor Panel.
  • It is recommended that the Level 1 Kayak Instructor Qualification is assessed by an Instructor other than the Instructor who has run the training course leading to the assessment.
  • Clear guidelines should be given in writing should a candidate fail the assessment as to the area/areas they need to improve on.
  • Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of the assessment.
  • No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 1 Kayak Instructor Assessment.
  • The candidate/assessor ratio should be maximum of 2:1
  • A Level 1 Kayak Instructor under 18 years must be accompanied on the water by another qualified and registered adult Instructor.  In this case each instructor may take up to 6 students on the water.
  • The Level 1 Kayak Instructor award is valid for 3 years. To maintain this award the instructor is required to attend further training or CPD/workshops within the three year period.

                        List of Equipment required for Assessment

A properly equipped kayak:

 

·         Rigid end loops and/or toggles

 

·         Suitable buoyancy

 

·         Suitable foot rest

 

·         A kayak must be of sufficient volume to carry all necessary safety equipment and perform any rescue as required by the Level 1 Kayak Instructor qualification.

 

 

Personal canoeing equipment:

 

·         Paddle

 

·         Wetsuit or sufficient thermal clothing

 

·         Spray Deck

 

·         Buoyancy Aid

 

·         Cagoule

 

·         Helmet

 

·         Adequate footwear

 

 

Equipment must also include:

 

·         Towing System

 

·         Bivvy Bag and/or group shelter

 

·         First Aid Kit

 

·         Knife

 

·         Whistle

 

·         Flask and Food

 

·         Waterproof Bag or other method of keeping equipment dry

*Those items marked with an asterisk need not be carried in the kayak during assessment but should be on site.

Below is the definition of the flat water operating areas for a Level 1 Instructor:

 

Very Sheltered Inland Water

 

 

Rivers

 

 

Sections of slow moving rivers that do not include rapids or weirs.
Canals

 

 

Canals with bank side access and egress and which have a minimum of commercial traffic.
Lakes

 

 

Shorelines of small lakes which do not have difficult landing areas and which are not large enough for problems to occur if there is a sudden change in conditions.
Sheltered Tidal Areas

 

 

Enclosed harbours with a minimum of commercial traffic, enclosed on three sides. Where there is minimal possibility of being blown off shore.

 

Small enclosed flat water bays where there is minimal possibility of being blown offshore.

 

The upper reaches of some suitable, slow moving, flat estuaries.

 


 

Level 2 Kayak Instructor

1.00     General aims

The Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification aims to enable candidates to

1.01     Become qualified to instruct basic kayaking skills and lead kayaking journeys on flat water with groups of up to 6 students.

1.02     Train and Assess for the Levels 1 & 2 Kayak Skills Award

1.03     Teach basic Flat Water Safety and Rescue and run RSR 1 Training Courses

1.04     Mentor Level 1 and 2 Kayak Instructor trainees.

The Level 2 Instructor is specifically not qualified to journey across a lake or more than 50 metres off shore

2.00     Training Course Outline

2.01     The Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered two day Level 2 Kayak Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration) and a half day assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.01     Hold the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award

3.02     Be registered with the Canoeing Ireland Training Unit as a Trainee Instructor

4.05     Have attended an approved Level 2 Kayak Instructor Training Course or Programme within the 24 months period preceding a selected assessment date.

Trainee Instructors who have completed training prior to January 2013

4.06     Have recorded in a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Logbook following the completion of a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours (on the water) of instructional experience and trip leading experience under the supervision of at least two currently registered Level 3 Kayak Instructors.


 

Trainee Instructors who have completed training after January 2013

4.06     Have recorded in a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Logbook following the completion of a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Training Course at least

·         30 hours (on the water) of instructional experience and trip leading experience under the supervision of at least two registered Canoeing Ireland Instructors.

 

·         10 of these hours must be under the supervision of a Level 3 Kayak Instructor, the remaining hours can be logged under the supervision of a Level 2 Kayak Instructor

 

·         15 hours in a closed cockpit kayak, the remaining hours can be logged in sit on tops

4.07     Have recorded in a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Logbook as part of the above logged hours details of assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 2 Kayak Skills Assessment. The group must consist of at least three participants.

4.08     Assist on two Level 2 Kayak Skills assessments.

4.09     Assist on two RSR 1 training courses (For training courses run January 2013 onwards only)

4.10     Participate in two Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.11     Completed an approved First Aid training Course (REC 2, WFA  2, ISA or equivalent).

4.12     Attended an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop

4.13     Be recommended for assessment by a registered  Canoeing Ireland Level 3 Instructor.

4.14     Submit a completed Level 2 Kayak Instructor Logbook accompanied by a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Assessment application to a registered Canoeing Ireland Instructor Assessor at least 2 weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

5.00     Format of Assessment

5.01     During a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Assessment candidates must satisfy an assessor that they are competent to bring a group on a journey and instruct on water of Grade I difficulty. As well as teaching and personal canoeing ability, candidates must also demonstrate that they are sufficiently mature and responsible to manage a group.

5.02     During assessment, aspects of a candidate’s personal kayaking skills and First Aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would have maintained a skill level equivalent to that of the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award and where possible to have improved on this.

As part of an assessment, a candidate would be expected to

5.03     Draw up a lesson plan lasting up to three hours and to organise an instructional session for a novice/basic level group on flat water.

      5.04     Plan and take the group on a significant journey of at least 2km

5.05     Teach any stroke, technique, or rescue applicable to flat water as outlined in the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award Syllabus.

5.06     Prepare a self-appraisal of their lesson plan/water session.

5.07     Demonstrate techniques and skills as required by the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award if requested to do so.

5.08     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively: Self-Rescue, X or Assisted X-Rescue, Unconscious Casualty and Eskimo Rescue.

5.14     Answer questions on aspects of canoeing covered during a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Training Course.

5.15     Attend an debrief at which a self-appraisal is presented.

                        Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification Guidelines

The Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification aims to enable participants to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct intermediate kayaking skills and lead kayak trips on Grade II water with groups of up to 6 students.

1.02     Become qualified to instruct basic kayaking skills and lead kayaking journeys on flat water with groups of up to 8 students.

1.03     Train and Assess for the Canoeing Ireland 1, 2 and 3 Kayak Skills Awards.

1.04     Teach intermediate River Safety and Rescue and run RSR 1 and RSR 2 Training Courses

1.05     Mentor Level 1, 2 and 3 Kayak Instructor trainees.

1.06     Have an awareness of the competitive canoeing disciplines.

2.00     Training Course Outline

The Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered four-day Level 3 Kayak Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration), and a two-day Assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.01     Hold a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification

3.02     Hold the Level 4 Kayak Skills Award

3.03     Be registered with the Canoeing Ireland Training Unit as a Trainee Level 3 Kayak Instructor

3.04     Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

3.05     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped kayak, personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment.

4.00     Applying for an Assessment

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     Have Maintained registration as a Level 3 Kayak Instructor trainee

4.02     Hold a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification

4.03     Hold the Canoeing Ireland Level 4 Kayak Skills Award

4.04     Be at least 18 years of age

4.05     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped kayak, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment

4.06     Have attended an approved Level 3 Kayak Instructor Training Course or Programme as organised by the Canoeing Ireland within the 24 months period preceding a selected assessment date.

4.07     Recorded in a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Logbook, following the completion of a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours on the river of instructional experience under the supervision of at least two registered Level 3 Kayak Instructors

4.08     Recorded as part of the 25 hours supervised instructional experience on at least three different river trips details of assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 3 Kayak Skills Assessment. This group must consist of at least three participants.

4.09     Assist on two Level 3 Kayak Skills Assessments.

4.10     Assist on two RSR 2 Courses (For training courses run January 2013 onwards only)

4.11     Participate in three Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.12     Possess a current and Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3, WFA 3, or equivalent)

4.13     Have completed an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop

4.14     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Level 3 Instructor

4.15     Returned to the Canoeing Ireland Office a completed Level 3 Kayak Instructor Logbook accompanied by all the pre-assessment requirements and a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment application no later than three weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

5.00     Format of the Assessment

5.01     During the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment candidates must satisfy the assessors that they are mature, responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group on water of Grade II difficulty. In addition to teaching and personal kayaking ability, candidates must also demonstrate that they are sufficiently mature and responsible to manage a group

5.02     During the period of the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment personal kayaking skills and application of first aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would at least have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 4 Kayak Skills and where possible improved on this.

As part of the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.03     Organise and lead an instructional session for beginners or intermediates over the course of a river trip.

5.04     Teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to water up to and including Grade II difficulty as outlined in the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award demonstrate effective group   control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

5.05     Prepare a self-appraisal of the lesson plan water session for the Assessor.

5.06     Demonstrate techniques and skills as required by the Level 4 Kayak Skills Award if requested to do so

5.07     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively Self Rescue, X and/or Assisted-X Rescue, All-in-Rescue, Unconscious Casualty, and Eskimo Rescue

5.08     Demonstrate an ability to roll competently in moving water without any prior set-up

5.09     Demonstrate an effective method of towing an empty kayak, a kayak with a participant who has a minor injury or illness and a kayak with a participant who has a major injury or illness.

5.10     Present a suitable kayak correctly fitted out for instruction along with other appropriate personal equipment (See Level 3 Kayak Instructor List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Level 3 Kayak Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

5.11     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport and instructional ability

5.12     Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of First Aid in the canoeing environment as well as a thorough working knowledge of the cause, effect and treatment of Shock, Hypothermia, EAR, CPR and the treatment of an unconscious casualty.

5.13     Answer questions on aspects of canoeing covered during a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Training Course

5.14     Attend an interview at which a self appraisal is presented

Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification Guidelines

  • It is recommended that Instructors other than the Instructor who has run the training course leading to the assessment assess a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification. Notwithstanding this, a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification can only be assessed by members of the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessor Panel
  • Clear guidelines should be given in writing should a candidate fail an assessment as to the areas that need to be improved on.

Level 4 Kayak Instructor

1.00     General aims

The Level 4 Kayak Instructor Qualification aims to enable candidates to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct advanced kayaking skills and lead safe kayaking trips on Grade III/ IV water with groups of up to 4 students.

1.02     Train and Assess for the Canoeing Ireland Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 Kayak Skills Awards.

1.03     Teach advanced River Safety and Rescue and run RSR 1, RSR 2 and RSR 3 Training Courses.

1.04     Promote safe kayaking standards, foster further participation and improvement in kayaking standards

2.00     Course Outline

The Level 4 Kayak Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered four day Level 4 Kayak Instructor training course and a one day assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Training Course a candidate must

3.01     Be currently registered with the Canoeing Ireland Office as a Level 3 Kayak Instructor

3.02     Have completed Level 5 Kayak Skills Training

3.03     Have unrestricted access to a suitable kayak, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for the Level 5 Kayak Skills award

3.04     Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

3.05     Be registered with the Canoeing Ireland Training Unit as a Trainee Level 4 Kayak Instructor

3.06     Complete a course application and return to Canoeing Ireland office

4.00     Applying to attend a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment

Candidates will only be invited to attend an assessment on the satisfactory attainment of Level 5 Kayak Skills award and hold the Level 3 Kayak Instructor qualification for at least one year

Before applying to attend a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     Be a Level 3 Kayak Instructor for a minimum of one year

4.02     Be currently registered with Canoeing Ireland Training & Development Unit

4.03     Hold the Level 5 Kayak Skills award

4.04     Attend two Level 4 Kayak Skills Training Courses

4.05     Attended two Level 4 Kayak Skills Assessments

4.06     Attend two RSR 3 courses

4.07     Participate in five Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold two Level 3 Skills Awards in other disciplines, or hold a Level 4 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.08     Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

4.09     Have unrestricted access to a suitable kayak, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for the Level 5 Kayak Skills award

4.10     Possess a current Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3 or equivalent)

4.11     Return a completed Level 4 Kayak Instructor assessment application to Canoeing Ireland no later than three weeks prior to the assessment date.

5.00     Format of a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment

The Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment will take place over one day and must include a river trip on Grade III+ difficulty over a distance of 2-5 miles (4-8 kilometres)

The Assessment Group on the river trip of the assessment should consist of the following:

Assessors Minimum of two registered Assessors on the Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessor Panel
Assessees Minimum of two and up to a maximum of four Assessees
Other River Trip Participants Minimum of three and up to a maximum of eight participants who must hold at minimum the Level 3 Kayak Skills Award and be working towards Level Kayak 4 Skills standard

During the assessment a candidate must

  • Satisfy the assessors that they are mature, responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group on a river trip of Grade III+ difficulty.
  • Show an ability to instruct a group of students on a river trip of Grade III+ difficulty.
  • Have knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of advanced white water techniques, skills and rescues.
  • Have knowledge, both oral and practical, of First Aid and CPR as applied in a high grade river environment.
  • Have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 5 Kayak Skills.
  • Attend an interview with assessors

As part of the Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.01     Present a suitable kayak correctly fitted out for instruction and other appropriate personal equipment (See Instructor List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Level 4 Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

5.02     Organise and lead a group of intermediate level paddlers on a river trip of Grade III+ difficulty over a distance of 2-5 miles (4-8 kilometres)

5.03     During the course of the river trip teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to Grade III+ water while demonstrating effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability. In addition teach any modern river running technique as outlined on Level 5 Kayak Skills syllabus such as boofs, flares etc.

5.04     Satisfy the assessors that he/she is mature, responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group on a river trip of Grade III+ difficulty.

5.05     Be able to demonstrate white water and deep water rescue techniques on a Grade III+ water

5.06     As part of an interview give a debrief of the river trip for the Assessors and answer questions, either written and oral, on relevant aspects of kayaking such as modern kayak design, advanced river grading, feedback techniques, suitable kayaks for students and activity and assessing skills.

                        Level 4 Kayak Instructor Qualification Guidelines

  • It is recommended that Instructors other than the Instructor who has run the training course leading to the assessment assess a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Qualification. Notwithstanding this, a Level 4 Kayak Instructor Qualification can only be assessed by members of the Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessor Panel
  • Clear guidelines should be given in writing should a candidate fail an assessment as to the areas that need to be improved on.
  • Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of an assessment.
  • No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Qualification.
  • The candidate/assessor ratio should be a maximum of 4:2
  • A Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessment must be assessed by a minimum of two members of the Level 4 Kayak Instructor Assessor Panel.

Sea Kayak Instructor Qualifications

Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor

1.00     General aims

The Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Qualification aims to enable participants to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct intermediate sea kayaking skills and lead coastal trips in smooth seas (Douglas Sea Scale) and force 3 winds with groups of up to 6 students

1.02     Become qualified to instruct basic kayaking skills and lead kayaking journeys on flat water with groups of up to 8 students.

1.03     Train and assess participants for Canoeing Ireland Level 1and 2 kayak skills award and the Level 3 sea kayak skills award.

1.04     Mentor Level 1 and 2 Kayak Instructor trainees and Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor trainees

1.05     Understand and instruct basic sea kayaking navigation and run Essential Coastal Navigation Courses.

2.00     Training Course Outline

The Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered four-day Level 3 Sea Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration), and a two-day Assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Course

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.01     Hold the Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification

3.02     Hold the Level 4 Sea Kayak Skills Award

3.03     Be registered with the Canoeing Ireland Training and Development Unit as a Trainee Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor

4.00     Applying for an Assessment

Before applying to attend an Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     Have Maintained registration as a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor trainee

4.02     Hold a Level 2 Kayak Instructor Qualification

4.03     Hold the Canoeing Ireland Level 4 Sea Kayak Skills Award

4.04     Be at least 18 years of age

4.05     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped Sea kayak, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Assessment

4.06     Have attended an approved Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Training Course or Programme  within the 24 months period preceding a selected assessment date.

4.07     Recorded in a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Logbook, following the completion of a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours of instructional experience on the sea in moving water conditions under the supervision of at least two registered Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructors.

4.08     Recorded as part of the 25 hours supervised instructional experience, on at least three different sea trips, details of assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 3 Sea Kayak Skills Assessment. This group must consist of at least three participants.

4.09     Assist on two Level 3 Sea Kayak Skills Assessments.

4.10     Assist on two Essential Coastal Navigation Courses.

4.11     Participate in three Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.12     Possess a current and Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3 or equivalent).

4.13     Have completed an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop.

4.14     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Level 3 Sea Instructor.

4.15     Return a completed Level 3 Sea Instructor Logbook, with all the above pre assessment requirements fully detailed, to the Canoeing Ireland office no later than three weeks prior to the assessment date.

5.00     Format of the Level 3 Sea Instructor Assessment

5.01     During the Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment candidates must satisfy the assessor that they are responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group on a coastal sea trip in smooth seas (Douglas Sea Scale) and force 3 winds.

5.02     During the period of the Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Assessment personal kayaking skills and application of first aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would at least have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 4 Kayak Skills and where possible improved on this.

As part of the Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.03     Organise and lead an instructional session for beginners or intermediates over the course of a coastal sea trip.

5.04     Teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to water up to and including smooth seas as outlined in the Level 3 Sea Kayak Skills Award.

5.05     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

5.06     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively Self Rescue, X and/or Assisted -X Rescue, All-in-Rescue, Unconscious Casualty, and Eskimo Rescue.

5.07     Demonstrate an ability to roll competently in moving water without any prior set-up.

5.08     Demonstrate all techniques and skills as required by Level 4 Sea Skills Award.

5.09     Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of First Aid in the sea kayaking environment as well as a thorough working knowledge of the cause/effect/treatment of Shock, Hypothermia, EAR, CPR and the treatment of an unconscious casualty.

5.10     Possess a sea kayak correctly fitted out for instruction and other appropriate personal equipment (See Sea Instructor List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Sea Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

5.11     Before setting off on the assessment trip the candidate will be required to produce a route summary for the day based on information gleaned from the chart, tide tables, pilot and weather forecast.  Participants may also be asked to complete a route plan for an area other than the assessment area.

5.12     Answer questions written or oral, on aspects of sea kayaking covered during the training course or in the support literature

5.13     Attend a debrief with the Assessor.

5.14     Have recorded in the prescribed logbook during the Sea Instructor Training, all sea kayaking trips. The logbook should reflect a wide range of sea kayaking experience during the training. Details of canoeing activities prior to applying for the Sea Instructor Training Course should also be recorded.

Candidates will only be invited to attend an assessment on the satisfactory completion of all the requirements including the submission of a logbook and attendance at the Sea Instructor Training.

Assessors Minimum of two registered Assessors on the Level 4 Sea Kayak Instructor Assessor Panel.
Assessment candidates Minimum of two and up to a maximum of four Assessment candidates.
Student group Minimum of three and up to a maximum of eight participants who must hold at a minimum the Level 3 Sea Kayak Skills Award and ideally be working towards Level Kayak 4 Sea Skills standard.

 

 

During the assessment a candidate must:

• Equipment should reflect such things as the season, the abilities of the group, and the sea conditions at the time the trip is being undertaken.

• Borrowed equipment will be assessed as if it were a candidate’s own.

• A candidate should be aware that having too much or inappropriate equipment can be as hazardous as having too little.

Level 4 Sea Kayak Instructor Qualification Assessment Guidelines

• No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 4 Sea Kayak Instructor Qualification.

• Clear guidelines will be given in writing should a candidate fail an assessment as to the areas that they need to improve on.

• Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of an assessment.

• Candidates with substantial previous experience may apply to the TDU committee for exemption from certain requirements, specifically competitions and the requirement for logging hours. Each application will be taken individually on its own merits and the committee’s decision is final.

The award will remain valid as long as each candidate attend a relevant cpd every three years.

Canoe Instructor Qualifications

Level 2 Canoe Instructor

1.00     General aims

The Level 2 Open Canoe Instructor qualification aims to enable participants to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct basic open canoeing skills and lead open canoeing journeys on flat water with groups of up to 6 students.

1.02     Train and Assess for the Levels 1 & 2 Open Canoe Skills Award

1.03     Teach basic River Safety and Rescue and run RSR 1 Training Courses

1.04     Mentor Level 2 Canoe Instructor trainees.

The Level 2 Instructor is specifically not qualified to journey across a lake or more than 50 metres off shore

2.00     Course Outline

2.01     The Level 2 Canoe Instructor requires that a candidate attend a registered two day Level 2 Canoe Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration) and a half day assessment.

3.00     Applying to attend a Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.01     Hold the Level 3 Canoe Skills Award

3.02     Be registered with the Canoeing Ireland Training Unit as a Trainee Instructor

3.03     Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

3.04     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped canoe  personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment.

4.00     Applying to attend an Assessment

Before applying to attend a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     have maintained registration as a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Trainee.

4.02     Hold the Level 3 Canoe Skills Certificate.

4.03     Be at least 18 years of age

4.04     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped canoe, personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level 2 Canoe Instructor assessment.

4.05     Have attended an approved Level 2 Canoe Instructor Training Course or Programme within the 24 months proceeding a selected assessment date.

Trainee Instructors who have completed training prior to January 2013

4.06     Have recorded in a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Logbook at least 25 hours (on the water) of varied instructional experience. This instructional experience should be under the supervision of a registered Level 3 Canoe Instructor.


 

Trainee Instructors who have completed training after January 2013

4.07     Have recorded in a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Logbook at least

 

·         30 hours (on the water) of instructional experience and trip leading experience under the supervision of at least two registered Canoeing Ireland Instructors.

 

·         10 of these hours must be under the supervision of a Level 3 Canoe Instructor, the remaining hours can be logged under the supervision of a Level 2 Canoe Instructor.

4.08     Have recorded in a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Logbook as part of the above logged hours details of assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 2 Canoe Skills Assessment. The group must consist of at least three participants.

4.09     Assist on two Level 2 Canoe Skills assessments

4.10     Assist on two RSR 1 training courses (For training courses run January 2013 onwards only)

4.11     Participate in two Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

4.12     Completed an approved First Aid training Course (REC 2 or equivalent).

4.13     Attended an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop

4.14     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Canoeing Ireland Level 3 Instructor.

4.15     Submit a completed Level 2 Canoe Instructor Logbook accompanied by a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment application to a registered Canoeing Ireland Instructor Assessor at least 2 weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

5.00     Format of Assessment

5.01     During a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment, candidates must satisfy an assessor that they are competent bring a group on a journey and to instruct on water of Grade I difficulty. Aswell as teaching and personal canoeing ability, candidates must also demonstrate that they are mature and responsible to manage a group.

5.02     During assessment, a candidate’s personal canoeing skills and First Aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 3 Canoe Skills Award and where possible improved on this.

As part of a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.03     Draw up a lesson plan lasting up to three hours and to organise an instructional session for a novice/basic level group on flat water.

      5.04     Plan and take the group on a significant journey of at least 2km

5.05     Teach any stroke, technique, or rescue applicable to flat water as outlined in the Level 2 Canoe Skills Award. Also teach any Knots on Level 2 Canoe Skills Award.

5.06     Prepare a self-appraisal of the water session.

5.07     Demonstrate all techniques and skills as required by the Level 3 Canoe Skills Award, if requested to do so.

5.08     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively: self rescue, X Rescue, Assisted X-Rescue. All rescues may be required to be demonstrated both as a rescuer and rescuee.

5.09     Demonstrate an effective method of towing an empty canoe, a canoe with a participant who has a minor injury or illness, a canoe with a participant who has a major injury or illness.

5.10     Present a suitable canoe correctly fitted out for instruction and with other appropriate personal equipment (See Level 2 Canoe Instructor List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Level 2 Canoe Instructor. Examination of equipment will form an important part of the overall assessment.

5.11     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

5.12     Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of basic First Aid as well as a thorough working knowledge of the cause/effect/treatment of Shock, Hypothermia, EAR and CPR.

5.13     Answer questions on aspects of canoeing covered during the Level 2 Canoe Instructor Training Course.

5.14     Attend an interview, where the candidate will present their self-appraisal.

                        Level 2 Canoe Instructor Guidelines

  • A Level 2 Canoe Instructor can only be assessed by a member of the Level 2 Canoe Instructor Assessment Panel.
  • • It is recommended that the Level 2 Canoe Instructor is assessed by an Instructor other than the Instructor who has run the training course leading to the assessment.
  • • Clear guidelines will be given in writing should a candidate fail the assessment as to the areas they need to improve on.
  • • Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of the assessment.
  • • No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 2 Canoe Instructor.
  • • The candidate/assessor ratio should be maximum of 2:1
  • Assessment to be carried out in solo canoes.

Level 3 Canoe Instructor

1.00     General aims of the Level 3 Canoe Instructor Qualification

The Level 3 Canoe Instructor Qualification aims to enable participants to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct intermediate open canoeing skills and lead open canoeing trips on Grade II water with groups of up to 6 students.

1.02     Become qualified to instruct basic open canoeing skills and lead open canoeing journeys on flat water with groups of up to 8 students.

1.03     Train and Assess for the Canoeing Ireland 1, 2 and 3 Open Canoe Skills Awards.

1.04     Teach intermediate River Safety and Rescue and run RSR 1 and RSR 2 Training Courses

1.05     Mentor Level 2 and 3 Canoe Instructor trainees.

1.06     Have an awareness of the competitive canoeing disciplines.

2.00     Course Outline

The Level 3 Canoe Instructor Qualification requires that a trainee attend a registered four-day Level 3 Canoe training course and a two-day assessment. Applying to attend a Training Course

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course, a candidate must

3.00     Applying to attend a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a trainee must

3.01     Have Maintained registration as a Level 3 Canoe Instructor trainee

3.02     Hold a Level 2 Canoe Instructor Qualification

3.03     Hold the Canoeing Ireland Level 4 Canoe Skills Award

3.04     Be at least 18 years of age

3.05     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped canoe, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment

3.06     Have attended an approved Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course or Programme as organised by the Canoeing Ireland within the 24 months period preceding a selected assessment date.

3.07     Recorded in a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Logbook, following the completion of a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours on the river of instructional experience under the supervision of at least two registered Level 3 Canoe Instructors

3.08     Recorded as part of the 25 hours supervised instructional experience on at least three different river trips details of assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 3 Canoe Skills Assessment. This group must consist of at least three participants.

3.09     Assist on two Level 3 Canoe Skills Assessments.

3.10     Assist on two RSR 2 Courses (For training courses run January 2013 onwards only)

3.11     Participate in three Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 3 Skills Award in another discipline.

3.12     Possess a current and Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3, WFA 3 or equivalent)

3.13     Have completed an Irish Sports Council approved Child Protection Awareness Workshop

3.14     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Level 3 Instructor

3.15     Returned to the Canoeing Ireland Office a completed Level 3 Canoe Instructor Logbook accompanied by all the pre -assessment requirements and a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment application no later than three weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

Format of the Assessment

3.16     During a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment, trainees must satisfy an assessor that they are mature, responsible, and competent to instruct, lead, and control a group on a river trip of Grade II difficulty.

3.17     During the period of a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course and if necessary at an assessment, a trainee’s personal canoeing skills and First Aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a trainee would at least have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 4 Canoe Skills Award and where possible improved on this.

As part of a Level 3 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

3.18     Organise and lead an instructional session for a group of canoeists with basic and/or intermediate level skills during the course of a river trip.

3.19     Teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to water up to and including Grade II        difficulty as outlined in the Level 3 Canoe Skills Award demonstrate effective group         control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

3.20     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

3.21     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively Self Rescue, X and/or Assisted -X Rescue, All-in-Rescue and Unconscious Casualty

3.22     Demonstrate an effective method of towing an empty Canoe, a canoe with a participant who has a minor injury or illness, a canoe with a participant who has a major injury or illness.

3.23     Prepare a debrief of the instructional session for an assessor.

3.24     Demonstrate all techniques and skills as required by the Level 4 Canoe Skills Award.

3.25     Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of First Aid in the canoeing environment as well as a thorough working knowledge of the cause/effect/treatment of Shock, Hypothermia,       EAR, CPR and the treatment of an unconscious casualty.

3.26     Possess a suitable canoe correctly fitted out for instruction and other appropriate personal equipment (see Instructor list of equipment). It would be expected that a trainee’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by an Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

3.27     Answer questions either written and oral on aspects of canoeing covered during the training course.

3.28     Have recorded in a logbook  all canoeing activities including details of the Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course. A logbook should reflect a wide range of canoe experience during the period of the Training Course. Details of canoeing activities (both kayak and/or canoe) prior to applying for the Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course should also be recorded.

Candidates will only be invited to attend an assessment on the satisfactory completion of all the requirements including the submission of a logbook and attendance on a complete Level 3 Canoe Instructor Training Course.

1.02     Train and Assess for the Canoeing Ireland Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 Canoe Skills Awards.

1.03     Run RSR 1, RSR 2 and RSR 3 Training Courses.

1.04     Promote safe Canoeing standards, foster further participation and improvement in canoeing standards

4.00     Applying to attend a Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment

To be Eligible to apply to attend a Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a candidate must

4.01     Be currently registered Level 3 Canoe Instructor with Canoeing Ireland Training & Development Unit

4.02     Hold the Level 5 Canoe Skills award

4.03     Attend & Log two Level 4 Canoe Skills Training Courses

4.04     Attend & Log two Level 4 Canoe Skills Assessments

4.05     Attend & Log two RSR 3 courses

4.06     Participate in Five Canoeing Ireland  Competitions or hold two level 3 skills awards in other disciplines or hold a Level 4 Skills award in another discipline

4.07     Have unrestricted access to a suitable Canoe, personal equipment and additional equipment as listed for the Level 5 Canoe Skills award

4.08     Possess a current Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3 or equivalent)

4.09     Return a completed Level 4 Canoe Instructor assessment application to Canoeing Ireland no later than three weeks prior to the assessment date.

5.00     Format of a Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment

The Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment will take place over one day and must include a river trip on Grade III/IV difficulty over a distance of 4-8 kilometres

The Assessment Group on the river trip of the assessment should consist of the following:

Assessors Minimum of two registered Assessors on the Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessor Panel
Assessees Minimum of two and up to a maximum of four Assesses
Other River Trip Participants Minimum of three and up to a maximum of eight participants who must hold at minimum the Level 3 Canoe Skills Award and be working towards Level Canoe 4 Skills standard

During the assessment a candidate must

  • Satisfy the assessors that they are mature, responsible and competent to lead and control a group on a river trip of Grade III/IV difficulty.
  • Show an ability to instruct a group of students on a river trip of Grade III difficulty.
  • Have knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of advanced white water techniques, skills and rescues.
  • Have knowledge, both oral and practical, of First Aid and CPR as applied in a high grade river environment.
  • Have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 5 Canoe Skills.

As part of the Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to

5.01     Present a suitable Canoe correctly fitted out for instruction and other appropriate personal equipment (See Instructor List of Equipment). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Level 4 Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

5.02     Organise and lead a group of intermediate level paddlers on a river trip of Grade III difficulty over a distance of 4-8 kilometres

5.03     During the course of the river trip teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to Grade III+ water while demonstrating effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability. In addition teach any skills such as Poling, Lining and Tracking etc that would aid Navigation of advanced white water.

5.04     Satisfy the assessors that he/she is mature, responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group on a river trip of Grade III+ difficulty.

5.05     Be able to demonstrate white water and deep water rescue techniques on Grade III/IV water

Level 4 Canoe Instructor Qualification Guidelines

  • A Level 4 Canoe Instructor Qualification can only be assessed by members of the Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessor Panel
  • Clear guidelines should be given in writing should a candidate fail an assessment as to the areas that need to be improved on.
  • Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of an assessment.
  • No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 4 Canoe Instructor Qualification.
  • The candidate/assessor ratio should be a maximum of 4:2
  • A Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessment must be assessed by a minimum of two members of the Level 4 Canoe Instructor Assessor Panel.
  • The Award will remain valid as long as a CPD is attended every three years.

A candidate should be aware that on advanced grade rivers, having too much or inappropriate equipment can nearly be as hazardous as having too little.

 

 


Level 5 Instructor (All Disciplines)

1.00     General Aims

The Level 5 Instructor Qualification, River, Sea and Open canoe is the highest instructional qualification awarded by the Irish Cane Union. It aims to enable candidates to

1.01     To carry on their remit as a Level 4 Instructor

1.02     Assess for the Canoeing Ireland Levels 1-5 Skills Awards

1.03     To be involved in  the sport of Kayaking at all levels, both personally and professionally

1.04     To play an active role in aspect of the development of the sport, be it through a club, on an individual instructional basis or through involvement with Canoeing Ireland

2.00     Training Course Outline

The Level 5 Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a 7 day training course and a two day assessment

The Training Course must be approved by Canoeing Ireland.  It  should run over 7 consecutive days – 4 days generic and 2 days discipline specific. The final day will be given over to feedback and action plans.  The Training Course will include and cover the following:

  • Review of basic skills
  • Importance of Practice in skill development
  • Use of a swimming  pool for a session on rolling techniques and teaching
  • Learning and developing physical skills and Instructing processes
  • Working with long term and short term students
  • Looking at other specific competitive disciplines, such as slalom and marathon to develop awareness of Instructing techniques and tools
  • Use of other disciplines to develop paddle and body awareness and Instructing  e.g. open canoe / freestyle
  • Use of audio visual tools, such as video cameras, for Instructing
  • Observation of Instructors from non related activities
  • Observation of Level 5 Instructors in their chosen discipline at work
  • The chance to be observed, by Level 5 Instructors in your chosen discipline, Instructing a group using new skills and techniques learnt
  • A comprehensive review and evaluation of the course
  • Thorough individual debrief / feedback and agreed action plans
  • Agree on a suitable project to be carried out before the assessment

3.00     Requirements

To be awarded the Level 5 Instructor Award candidates must meet the following criteria

3.01     Hold the Level 4 Kayak Instructor qualification in their discipline

3.02     Attend a Canoeing Ireland  approved 7 day Level 5 Instructor training   Course within two years of selected assessment date

3.03     Meet all pre- assessment criteria as laid down in agreed Individual Action Plan on Training Course. Notwithstanding this, there must be a minimum time frame of 6 months between training and assessment, with a maximum time frame of 2 years. After this 2 year period has elapsed, then the Training Course must be re-taken at the discretion of the TDC, on an individual candidate application

3.04     Work with two long term students who will be brought to the Assessment.

3.05     Successfully complete a Level 5 Instructor Assessment

3.06     Hold a current and valid First Aid Certificate, as approved by the TDU of Canoeing Ireland.

3.07     Be at least 18  years of age

4.00     Assessment

The Assessment Procedure will be as follows:

4.01     Meet all criteria as outlined in 2.01 – 2.07 above

4.02     Apply for Assessment through the Canoeing Ireland Office

4.03     Before applying for assessment logbooks and action plans must have met a standard checklist, upon submission to the Office

4.04     Action Plans and Logbooks must then be brought along to an assessment

Format of an Assessment

The Assessment will take the following format

4.05     It will be two  days in duration

·         On Day 1 the candidate will be observed  working with his/her  2 long term students

·         On Day 2 the candidate will be observed  working with another candidates students

4.06     Present a project  in an interview with the assessors

4.07     Be observed on each day by a different assessor

      4.08     Participate in seven Irish Canoeing Competitions or hold a Level 4 Skills Award in another discipline.

5.00     Guidelines

5.01     Regardless of the result comprehensive written feedback will be given to the candidate

5.02     If the candidate fails any part / all of the assessment then the whole assessment must be re-taken.

5.03     Upon successful completion of an assessment then Level 5 Instructors must still work within the remit of the Level 4 Instructor as regards ratios and grade of water

5.04     Assessors must be on the Canoeing Ireland Approved Level 5 Instructor Assessor Panel, or be approved by Canoeing Ireland .  Due to the lack of Canoeing Ireland Level 5 Instructor Panel members it is expected that  experienced and suitably qualified Instructors / Instructors from  CANI / WCA / SCA / BCU Level 5 Instructor / Instructor Assessment Panels will be used, until such time as there are a suitable number of Canoeing Ireland Panel members

5.05     The ratio at assessment is to be  2 assessors : 2 assessees

5.06     There will be no interaction between candidates and assessors until such time as the assessment is complete and results are arrived at.

 


Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor

 

1.00     General aims

The Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification aims to enable participants to:

1.01     Become qualified to instruct intermediate kayaking skills and lead groups of up to six people in small surf (2-3 feet/waist high). A Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor is specifically not qualified to lead and/or instruct groups on reef breaks.

1.02     Become qualified to instruct basic kayaking skills and lead kayaking journeys on flat water with groups of up to 8 students.

1.03     Train and Assess for the Canoeing Ireland 1, 2 and 3 Paddlesurf Skills Awards.

1.04     Mentor Level 1, 2 and 3 Kayak Instructor trainees.

1.05     Have an awareness of the competitive canoeing disciplines.

2.00     Training Course Outline

The Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification requires that a candidate attend a registered four-day Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor training course (or a programme of similar duration), and a two-day Assessment.

3.04     Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

3.05     Have unrestricted access to a fully equipped surf kayak/waveski, personal equipment, and additional equipment as listed for a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment.

4.00     Applying for an Assessment

Before applying to attend a Level 3 Kayak Instructor Assessment, a candidate must:

4.01     Have Maintained registration as a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor trainee.

4.06     Have attended an approved Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Training Course or Programme as organised by the Canoeing Ireland within the 24 months period preceding a selected assessment date.

4.07     Recorded in a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Logbook, following the completion of a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Training Course at least 25 hours of instructional experience under the supervision of at least two registered Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructors or higher.

4.08     Recorded as part of the 25 hours supervised instructional experience on at least three different surf breaks assisting in the preparation of a group for a Level 3 Paddlesurf Skills Assessment. This group must consist of at least three participants.

4.12     Possess a current and Canoeing Ireland approved First Aid Certificate (REC 3, WFA 3, or equivalent).

4.13     Be recommended for assessment by a registered Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor or higher.

4.14     Returned to the Canoeing Ireland Office a completed Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Logbook accompanied by all the pre-assessment requirements and a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment application no later than three weeks prior to a selected assessment date.

5.00     Format of the Assessment

5.01     During the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment candidates must satisfy the assessors that they are mature, responsible and competent to instruct, lead and control a group in small surf. In addition to teaching and personal kayaking ability, candidates must also demonstrate that they are sufficiently mature and responsible to manage a group.

5.02     During the period of the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment personal kayaking skills and application of first aid may be assessed. It would be expected that a candidate would at least have maintained a skills level equivalent to that of the Level 4 Paddlesurf and where possible improved on this.

As part of the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment, a candidate will be expected to:

5.03     Organise and lead an instructional session for beginners or intermediates.

5.04     Teach any stroke, technique or rescue applicable to small surf as outlined in the Level 3 Paddlesurf Skills Award.

5.05     Demonstrate effective group control, group rapport, and instructional ability.

5.06     Prepare a self-appraisal of the lesson plan water session for the Assessor.

5.07     Demonstrate techniques and skills as required by the Level 4 Paddlesurf Skills Award if requested to do so.

5.07     Demonstrate an ability to carry out the following rescues efficiently and effectively Self Rescue, X and/or Assisted-X Rescue, All-in-Rescue, Unconscious Casualty, and Eskimo Rescue.

5.08     Demonstrate an ability to roll competently in moving water without any prior set-up.

5.09     Demonstrate an effective method of towing an empty kayak, a kayak with a participant who has a minor injury or illness and a kayak with a participant who has a major injury or illness.

5.10     Present a suitable surfkayak or wave ski correctly fitted out for instruction along with other appropriate personal equipment (See List of Equipment below). It would be expected that a candidate’s equipment would be of a standard consistent with the responsibilities likely to be encountered by a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor. Examination of equipment will form part of the overall assessment.

5.11     Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of First Aid in the canoeing environment as well as a thorough working knowledge of the cause, effect and treatment of Shock, Hypothermia, EAR, CPR and the treatment of an unconscious casualty.

5.12     Answer questions on aspects of canoeing covered during a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Training Course.

5.13     Attend an interview at which a self-appraisal is presented.

Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification Guidelines

  • It is recommended that Instructors other than the Instructor who has run the training course leading to the assessment assess a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification. Notwithstanding this, a Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification can only be assessed by members of the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessor Panel.
  • Clear guidelines should be given in writing should a candidate fail an assessment as to the areas that need to be improved on.
  • Candidates cannot depend on any assistance (material or practical) during the course of an assessment.
  • No other award may be assessed at the same time as the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Qualification.
  • The candidate/assessor ratio should be a maximum of 6:2
  • A Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment must be assessed by a minimum of two members of the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessor Panel.

Equipment required for the Level 3 Paddlesurf Instructor Assessment

A properly equipped kayak must include:

 

· Rigid end loops and/or toggles

· Suitable buoyancy

· Suitable foot rest

· A kayak must be of sufficient volume to carry out all necessary safety equipment and perform any rescue as required by the Level 3 Kayak Instructor qualification

· Wetsuit and /or sufficient thermal clothing

· Spray Deck

· Buoyancy Aid with integrated harness

· Cagoule

· Helmet
