Following the announcement of new restrictions by An Taoiseach, with people required to stay in their homes unless entirely necessary, as well as similar restrictions imposed in Northern Ireland from the 28th March, Waterways Ireland have made the decision to advise users of their navigations to refrain from taking part in any activity on the water. Essentially closing their waterways for recreational and navigational use, effective from midnight 30th of March. Lock keepers and water patrollers will no longer be available aside from essential water level maintenance and emergency works. The tow paths will remain open but Waterways Ireland have advised that these should only be used for exercise within the 2km radius from your home advised by government, and with appropriate social distancing.

Waterways Ireland have stated that these measures were taken in order to prioritize the safety of their customers and staff, and to ensure they are doing their part as an organisation to tackle COVID-19. These measures will  be reviewed as the situation develops.
