I’m leaving the sport with nothing but fond memories. My career probably didn’t pan out in the ideal way with the Olympics’ always being the ultimate goal, but I dont think I would change anything at all. I raced because I love it, the results should never affect that. It’s been an incredible journey being able to represent Ireland at this level and it’s something I’ll always be proud of. Its also a journey made possible by countless people, there are so many people who I’ll never be able to thank enough for their support and belief over the years, and of course the support of Canoeing Ireland, has been exceptional for which I’ll always be grateful.”

High performance director, Jon Mackey had this to say –

“Throughout his career, Sam was known for his commitment to the sport as a powerful athlete on the water, he embodies the concept of high-performance which he balanced exceptionally well with his ability to connect with the rest of the team. He is a great athlete and a great team mate”

While Sam brought an unrivalled level of commitment to his training, he is also well known for his sense of humour, providing much-needed levity during high-pressure moments and helping to keep everyone grounded.
Although he has stepped away from competitive paddling, Sam will continue his involvement in the sport by serving as Canoeing Ireland’s Communications Lead. His experience and passion will ensure his influence on the Irish canoeing community remains strong.
