We had a night to remember at the 2024 Canoeing Ireland Awards. With 2024 being the latest in a long line of years to be proud of for Canoeing Ireland, it is more important than ever to celebrate and recognise the incredible community who helps drive our sport forward. The awards were co-hosted by Canoeing Ireland’s Ciaran ‘Kipper’ Magiure, and multiple international medallist Jenny Egan-Simmons. Athletes from each of the competition disciplines had their achievements over the season recognised, as well as the all important awards to celebrate the contribution of our volunteers, clubs and wider community. There were some particularly high flyers in this years athlete awards, with a host of medal winners in receipt of awards – Freestyle bronze medallist Eoghan Kelly, freestyle junior European Champion Leah Hough, marathon gold medallist Sean Butterly (also a silver medallist in Canoe Sprint). As well as Paris Olympians Madison Corcoran and Liam Jegou.
There were some truly remarkable winners in this years awards, testament to the passion of the paddle sports community in bringing our sport to new heights. Some particularly notable winners were – the Event of the Year going to ‘Summit 2 Sea for MND’, a charity event honouring the late Adrian Harkin, the Club Hero Award awarded to the tireless Ivan MacDonald for hos commitment to the Mullingar Harbour Canoe Polo Club, and the prestigious Volunteer of the Year going to Autumn O’Donnell for her truly remarkable work in Paddlesurf. There was also brand new award presented at this years event, the PaddleAble Community Award was introduced to demonstrate Canoeing Irelands commitment to celebrating the diversity in our community, and promote inclusion in paddle sports. The award was presented to Moira Scott.
The night was capped off with Lynda Byrne being presented with a lifetime achievement Award. As well as being the first female president of Canoeing Ireland, Lynda was also instrumental in bringing the ICF Women in Sport Symposium to Dublin.
