Shannon Paddlers Kayak and Canoeing Club has been named Munster Club of the Year at the Federation of Irish Sport ‘Volunteer in Sports’ Awards, recognising their outstanding commitment to inclusion, wellbeing, and community engagement.
Founded in 2017 by Brid O’Connell, Shannon Paddlers grew from the success of Shannon Dragons, a dragon boat initiative supporting breast cancer survivors, and established itself in O’Briensbridge, Co. Clare, under the motto “Wellness on the Water.” The club offers kayaking, paddleboarding, surfski, and Canadian canoeing, creating an inclusive space for women over 50, adults aged 65+, and those living with or recovering from chronic illness.
With 143 members and growing, Shannon Paddlers removes barriers to participation through access to equipment, a non-competitive approach, and initiatives like the Sanctuary Paddlers programme, welcoming migrant and refugee communities. A major milestone was achieved in November 2025, when the club secured a permanent riverside base, enabling volunteer leaders to run weekly flatwater and whitewater sessions, local and national trips, and community events.
Beyond paddling, Shannon Paddlers actively contributes to the wider community through charity swims, river clean-ups, Quest events nationwide, and hosting the SUP Winter Series race. Members also fundraised to install a community defibrillator, highlighting the club’s dedication to wellbeing and safety.
This award recognises Shannon Paddlers’ outstanding work in using paddling to promote wellness, foster inclusion, and strengthen communities across Co. Clare and beyond.
