Canoeing Ireland is working closely with partners and stakeholders to ensure the 65th Liffey Descent takes place on Saturday 19 September 2026.
The Liffey Descent is one of Ireland’s longest-running sporting events and holds a special place within the paddling community. This milestone year is an opportunity to bring that community together to celebrate 65 years of this iconic event.
Recent high temperatures and prolonged dry weather have placed increased focus on water levels on Irish waterways. These conditions are part of a much wider global challenge, with climate change and changing weather patterns increasingly affecting communities, natural environments and sporting events around the world.
The Liffey Descent is not immune to these conditions, and water levels are a key consideration in planning the event. Canoeing Ireland is working closely with the ESB regarding water levels on the river for the event. A final decision on this will not be available until approximately two weeks before the event, when the prevailing conditions and water levels can be assessed against wider demands on the river system.
Importantly, the 65th Liffey Descent will take place this year. Our focus is on delivering a safe, enjoyable and memorable event, and we appreciate the patience and support of the paddling community as preparations progress.
