Canoeing Ireland has confirmed that the 65th edition of the Liffey Descent will take place on Saturday, 19th September 2026, marking another milestone for one of Ireland’s most iconic and enduring sporting events.
For over six decades, the Liffey Descent has brought together paddlers of all levels to take on the unforgettable challenge of navigating the River Liffey from Kildare to Dublin. In 2026, this historic race promises to be bigger and better than ever, marking a major milestone in Irish canoeing.
Whether you’re an experienced competitor chasing a podium finish or a first-time participant looking to be part of something special, the 65th Liffey Descent offers a unique mix of competition, adventure and a community celebration of all things paddling. Expect the same thrilling weirs, fast-moving water, and incredible atmosphere that have made this event a staple of the paddling calendar since its beginning in 1960.
This landmark edition will celebrate the rich heritage of the race while welcoming a new generation of paddlers to write the next chapter. For the 2026 edition we are making a return to the Trinity Boat Club in Islandbridge for the race finish. The move is aimed at enhancing the overall event experience, providing a more vibrant finish line atmosphere and allowing us to celebrate the festival of paddling that is the Liffey Descent.
Planning for the 2026 event has involved close collaboration with key stakeholders, including Sport Ireland, the ESB, the OPW, DCC, the K Club, Failte Ireland, SDCC and Kildare CC. Special thanks to Trinity Boat Club and Rowing Ireland for making the return to the old finish line possible and to SISK, the NTA and the OPW in the context of ongoing works on a new commemorative bridge spanning the River Liffey at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge. This careful planning process aimed to help ensure that the event can continue to grow while respecting the evolving landscape of the river and its surroundings.
The Liffey Descent will continue to welcome a diverse field of participants, from elite international racers chasing podium finishes to recreational paddlers taking on a personal challenge. Each year, hundreds of competitors descend the Liffey, united by the shared goal of reaching the finish line and becoming part of the event’s enduring story.
Race entry is now open, with all interested paddlers encouraged to get their entries in on the Canoeing Ireland and Liffey Descent websites. More information and event updates will be shared across social media and on the official website in the lead-up to race day.
