Canoeing Ireland would like to remind our members of our commitment to the CARA Sport Inclusion Ireland Charter. Cara are the National Governing Organisation for disability sport inclusion in Ireland.

Sport and physical activity are central to the fabric of life in Ireland. As citizens of this state, people with disabilities have a right to be active within their local communities. In our efforts to truly understand what it is really like for a person with a disability to be active in Ireland, we carried out nationwide focus groups with people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities.” – Cara

People across Ireland with disabilities have asked us to commit to:

Openness

Be open to and understanding of all people with disabilities

People

Access training for our staff/volunteers to facilitate the inclusion of people with disabilities

Activities

Develop and deliver inclusive activities

Facilities

Review our facility/venues/equipment to make our organisation more accessible

Promotion

Promote the inclusive nature of our activities, in a variety of formats

Canoeing Ireland alongside Cara have developed a Disability Inclusion plan for 2021 which aims to pursue our commitment to each of the five areas. Each month throughout 2021 Canoeing Ireland will give our members an opportunity to increase awareness of various disabilities and how they can be managed in a paddling environment through a range of online education campaigns and Zoom training sessions.

We encourage all of our clubs and member organisations (affiliates) to sign up to the Sport Inclusion Disability Charter here:
